History

In 1937 Vincent Gangemi Sr. started Gangemi Funeral Home on the corner of 9th and Mountain Streets in South Philadelphia. At that time viewings and funerals were being held out of families’ residences and the business was just a store front office. In the early forties, families were beginning to want viewings held at a funeral home so in 1945 the Gangemi Funeral Home was moved to its present location at 2236-40 S. Broad Street (at Wolf St.). In the coming years Vincent purchased the property next to him at 2232-34 S. Broad St. for an investment as well as for future expansion. Throughout the years the funeral home went through many renovations and expansions to accommodate the growing needs of the families we serve. The last major renovation and expansion was done in 1999 to include two larger viewing rooms, offices, and handicap-accessible main entrance.

Vincent's wife, Anne Gangemi, worked alongside her husband for over fifty years and continues to be active as the funeral home's business manager. Their son, Vincent C. Gangemi, Jr., has been running the funeral home since the early 1990s along with James L. Guercio who joined the firm in 1990 to help meet the needs of our families.   Both of them have over 30 years experience in the funeral industry.  Vincent C. Gangemi Sr. retired around this time and recently passed away in 2005.  Despite this major loss to our family, we continue to serve and comfort the families with whom he established a firm trust in the care for their loved ones.
